Reboot your routine.
We're knee-deep in winter and our skin is starting to complain. There's still time to make some simple swaps to save your skin.
The air outside is biting and the heat indoors is cranked. What’s happening to your skin? A lot! Cold winter temps and indoor heating leave skin parched and tight. This dryness leads to cracks in the outer layer of skin, loss of hydration, and ultimately, inflammation. Yikes.
It’s time to give your skincare routine a seasonal reboot! Make these 6 swaps for winter and your skin will thank you.
1. Instead of foaming cleanser, use cleansing balm.
Foaming cleansers are great at removing stuff – all the stuff, including your skin’s precious oils. You can’t afford to lose those natural oils in winter so ditch the gels and foams and get yourself a cleansing balm. Oil-based cleansing balms remove dirt, pollution and makeup gently without over-stripping. Plus, they leave skin’s lipid barrier intact so all your glowy goodness is locked in. Added bonus: our Wonder Balm is infused with herbs like calendula, chamomile and comfrey so skin receives an extra healing boost while being cleansed.
2. Instead of body lotion, use body oil.
When it comes to delivering deep-down moisture for winter, lotion is simply out of its league. Lotions are largely comprised of alcohol and water so much of the moisture evaporates quickly, leaving skin thirsty again in no time. Instead, a body oil offers long-lasting comfort to dry, tight skin. Choose a high-quality, plant-based oil like our Vanilla Moon to not just moisturize but condition and nourish skin with vitamins, antioxidants and omega fatty acids.
3. Instead of moisturizer, use facial oil.
Light face creams are great in the summer when you crave cool hydration but winter calls for a deeper solution: facial oils. Just a few drops of luxurious plant oil help to plump, feed and revitalize skin on a cellular level. Our Yin Yang Balancing Facial Oil is perfectly formulated for winterized skin. Oils like rosehip seed, argan and pomegranate help to balance out seasonal dryness while brightening your overall complexion.
4. Instead of makeup wipes, use oil cleanser.
Besides contributing tons of waste to our landfills each year and being mediocre at actually removing makeup, wipes are super harsh! All that tugging at the eye area can cause fine lines and many wipes are packed with alcohol, parabens and surfactants which can further dry and damage skin. No thank you! Instead, tag in an oil cleanser like our White Rabbit Eye Makeup Remover which is specially formulated with gentle herbs and skin-softening oils. Plus, you use it with a reusable, washable face cloth.
5. Instead of harsh scrubs, use a gentle exfoliator.
Dry skin goes hand in hand with flakes and our natural inclination is to scrub that stuff away. Pause. Before reaching for your usual scrub, consider that our faces are barraged by the elements in winter and this may cause skin to be sensitive and inflamed. The last thing it needs is an aggressive scrubbing. Switch to a gentle exfoliant with finer particles of oatmeal, grains or clays to softly buff skin without irritation. Our Coconut Detox Face Scrub even has coconut milk powder to replenish moisture and leave skin supple after cleansing.
6. Instead of hand cream, use a multitasking balm.
During winter, your hands are exposed to as much, if not more, stressful elements. From indoor heating to biting winds to repeated washing for cold + flu prevention, your hands are going through it! Consider upgrading your usual hand cream to a heavier, multitasking balm to treat and nourish skin. Balms create a protective barrier that locks in moisture and keeps skin protected. Plus, these multitaskers can be used for everything from smoothing split ends to repairing dry, cracked heels.
